Following their main stage slot at Boardmasters this year – Sloes are certainly moving in the right direction, and fast. They took some time out to chat to us about everything from the origins of their sound to their dream performance.
Check out their new single 'Young' below!
FFY: Your sound is very unique - with the mixture of hypnotic vocals and the blend of indie, folk and pop. How did you develop this, is it a mixture of each of your musical interests?
We all have quite similar music taste, so we love going to gigs with each other and seeing whats going on in the music scene. We draw on all of our favorite bands for inspiration and we are excited to be doing something new by having that folk influence.
FFY: Are you guys just big fans of the sloe berry (and gin) or is there another meaning behind the bands name?
A couple of our parents make sloe gin most years so we have all had our fair share of mandatory berry picking, but we also wanted to pick something that didn't have huge meaning or background behind it so we were able to give it significance.
FFY: Your new single 'Young' is about adolescent rebellion – what's the most rebellious thing each of you did when you were younger?
If we told you that, we would have to kill you!
FFY: You played at Boardmasters this year on the main stage – is this the biggest performance you've done so far? And what was the best and worst thing about it?
We did! Yes it has been the biggest performance to date and one we wont be forgetting anytime soon. It was a huge honour to play on the same stage that the likes of Chase and Status, Lianna Le Havas, Michael Kiwunaka and some of our other favourite bands were on. Best part was being able to play to our friends and passers by and get the reaction we got. It was raining all morning and we were really worried people would stay in their tents but just as we started the sun came out and was boiling all day. Its was every bands dream!
Worst thing- the stage was quite slippy and Katie was worried about falling over in her boots. She had one small slip but managed to stay upright for most of the set.
FFY: The band seems to be on the rise very quickly, what are your plans for this year and next – a tour, more festivals, album...?
We have been in the studio recording new tracks so we are all excited to hear those and get them out as soon as possible. We have a few dates in the UK planned, one coming up this Thursday for Mahogany which we are really excited to be apart of. We have just filmed a couple of acoustic sessions with them and have played with one of the bands before who were great so its looking to be a really fun evening.
FFY: Where in the world would be a dream-come-true to perform?
In the UK, Glasto and also 'Later with Jools Holland' is something we all want to tick of our list.
Other places in the world, Madison Square Gardens, Coachella and Burning Man festival.
