Nathan Ball

After his beautifully intimate show in East London last week, we caught up with Nathan Ball – chatting about future plans, life in the mountains and everything in between.

FFY: You wrote ‘Right Place’ when you were up in the mountains following your tour - do you find these kinds of places the most inspiring?

NB: I do for sure! I've spent a lot of time up in the mountains growing up and find being totally surrounded by nature the biggest inspiration for my songwriting. A lot of the songs draw inspiration from time by the sea or up in the mountains.

FFY:. When, and what was the biggest turning point in your career so far?

NB: I think Radio 1 playlisting Right Place has been the biggest turning point so far. It was very surreal listening to DJ's who I used to listen to in the car on the way to school playing my song! That was very surreal!

FFY: If you weren’t a musician what do you think you’d be?

NB: I'm not too sure to be honest, I'd hope something just as fun! Probably tucked away in the mountains snowboarding or a nice little job by the sea somewhere.

FFY: You performed at the likes of Secret Garden Party and Farr Festival this year; do you feel the festival scene is the best environment to build your name? And why?

NB: They're certainly the most fun! They're great in that people are just cruising around in the day wandering into tents so they find a lot of new music and you meet a lot of new fans through them which is cool! When you play a headline show people tend to come because they know your music already so I guess festivals are the ones to build the name. Summers for us are just full of festivals every weekend, so we love the festival season!

FFY: What are your plans for next year? Can we expect an album?

NB: We've recorded a couple more singles with Ian Grimble who we recorded Right Place with and fingers crossed we'll be starting work on an album... that's the dream anyway!
