Festival For You

We catch up with Sian Evans, formerly of Kosheen, about her exciting new journey into solo music and why Atlas Festival is a must-go-to this summer.

FFY You’ve recently released a great collab with Stanton Warriors, can we expect more of the same upbeat vibes in your next few song releases?

Sian I approach each collaboration with a fresh ear and hopefully compliment the vibe of the track with my vocal. In recent years I have taken the attitude that I am writing a song that I may not necessarily sing myself. This is quite liberating and gives me a wider pool of experience to write from.

FFY Your sound varies across your releases, is experimentation a massive part in the creation of new music?

Sian I have always been associated with dance music, as it is the music of my generation but i simply love melody and harmony. The new Band has an organic feel and real instruments which gives me the opportunity to represent the songs I have written over the years with a different tilt.

FFY Atlas Festival is new and exciting music festival this year, what attracted you to playing at it this summer?

Sian I am proud to support this festival. It is always lovely to be on the bill of a brand new event. In a way we are both starting out together and we are both investing our support in each other.

FFY What is it about music festivals that make a performance so different to a regular gig?

Sian I cut my professional teeth on the festival circuit and you can always get an honest reaction from a fezzi crowd. People who may have not known your music will pass by and may stop and be tempted to buy your record having enjoyed your performance.

There is a real feeling of community at a festival; the nature is a great leveller of ego class and style. We are all in it together.

FFY Who are you excited to see at Atlas Festival, and why?

Sian I love Ray Mears! I may ask him to marry me! Or at least make me a canoe.....

FFY What are your plans for this year?

Sian My plan is to release my debut solo album. I have about 100 songs to pick from and still writing. I have never been so prolific penning songs with Ron Mcelroy is a joy and I guess a perfect way to process what has happened in my life in the last years of Kosheen and the new beginning as a solo artist.
